Otoform: A Podiatrist’s Special Power

Did you know podiatrists have a handy trick up their sleeve for relieving pressure and discomfort between the toes? It’s called Otoform – a silicone-based compound that can be moulded into customised wedges to help manage corns, calluses, and painful joints.

In this video, our podiatrist Cameron demonstrates how Otoform can be used to offload pressure from a corn between the toes. (Yes – we know those are Cameron’s fingers, not toes! But it gives you a good idea of how the device is applied in the clinic.)

How It Works

The process begins by mixing Otoform with a catalyst. The material starts off white, but as the catalyst is worked through, it turns pink – that’s our cue the setting process has started. From this point, we have only a few minutes to shape the wedge into the correct position before it begins to harden.

Once set, Cameron uses a scalpel to cut an aperture into the wedge where the corn is located. In this example, he’s marked the area with a light texta, but in real life, the corn typically leaves a visible impression in the Otoform, making it easy to know where to make the cut-out.

The Power of Pressure Redistribution

Otoform works in two main ways:

  1. Pressure redistribution – The wedge fills the gap between the toes, spreading pressure more evenly across both adjacent toes. This relieves the excess focal pressure that caused the corn in the first place.

  2. Targeted offloading – The aperture (cut-out) around the corn further reduces pressure by removing direct contact over the painful area entirely.

This combination allows the thickened skin to gradually reduce over time. In many cases, a well-made Otoform wedge can completely resolve a chronic corn. Even if full resolution isn’t achieved, it can significantly reduce symptoms and increase the time between routine podiatry visits.

A Simple, Cost-Effective Solution

The best part? This treatment is:

  • Low-cost (typically under $20)

  • Quick to make

  • Low risk

  • Generally very well tolerated

The lifespan of an Otoform wedge depends on its thickness – thicker devices last longer but may be less comfortable between the toes. With a moderate thickness and proper care, they can last several years.

Not bad for something that could completely resolve a painful, ongoing issue – all for around $20!
